“HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE” – FILM & DISCUSSION
THURSDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2012 @ 18:45 / GOETHE-INSTITUT ATHEN
ATHENS PRIDE is thrilled to present the first European screening of the American film, HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE (www.surviveaplague.com). The film won the Gotham Award for Best Documentary 2012 in November. Last week it received the New York Film Critics Award for Best First Feature. This is the first time that this award has gone to a documentary film, and is especially significant given the influence and high standards of the New York critics. And on Monday, the National Academy announced that HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE is short-listed for the Oscar for Best Documentary.
HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE is the story of the brave young men and women, who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation, and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence. This group of activists bucked oppression and, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, identifying new treatments and moving them through trials and into drugstores in record time. In the process, they saved lives and ended the darkest days of this plague in the U.S. Their amazing story of empowerment and activism stands as a powerful inspiration to future generations. It is a road map, and a call to arms. This is how you change the world!
A PANEL DISCUSSION will follow the film with the writer and activist Jim Eigo, a heroic “plague survivor” from New York, Andrea Gilbert (Athens Pride), Nikos Dedes (Positive Voice www.positivevoice.gr), and Gregory Vallianatos (Coordinator of HIV/AIDS NGOs at the Ministry of Health).
