The year 2019 is a milestone in Greek LGBTQI history, a history inextricably linked to the street.
The Stonewall Inn Uprising on June 28, 1969, in New York City, spurred the creation of a major liberation movement, the Gay Liberation Front. One year later, on June 28, 1970, the first Christopher Street Liberation Day March took place. This march would become the model for Prides worldwide.
Thirty-five years later, on June 25, 2005, the LGBTQI people of Greece proudly took to the streets of Athens to claim our visibility and respect in the 1st Athens Pride Parade.
On September 21, 2018, Zak Kostopoulos/Zackie Oh! breathed his last, murdered on an Athenian street in broad daylight. The 15th Athens Pride pays tribute to the memory of our beloved Zak. We remember his courageous activism and together with the community demand justice for his death.
Athens Pride 2019 focuses on the role of the street as a democratic space of demonstration and revolution, but also of triumph in the face of injustice and brutality. This year’s poster presents some emblematic moments in the streets of our LGBTQI history.
On June 8, 2019, we once again proudly take to the historic streets of Athens. But that is not enough. On every street we walk, we demand to have freedom and safety from all forms of abuse and violence. The street also belongs to us.
