Athens Pride 2020

Press Release

Despite the current hardships, Athens Pride 2020 redefines its format and declares its presence for another year, but without its traditional mass event, and in so doing, continues to contribute to the visibility, support, and promotion of the demands of the Greek LGBTQI+ community.

This year’s Athens Pride Week takes place Sept 4-11, presents daily digital material on the official Athens Pride website and on social media. Additionally, some Pride Week events will take place in the city wherever health directives can be strictly followed. Events include real-life LGBTQI+ stories, seminars, discussions, films, exhibitions, DJ sets, and performances, as well as the Athens Pride 2020 campaign: Knowing and Supporting LGBTQI+ Organizations, aimed at strengthening the LGBTQI+ community.

Finally, the main event of Athens Pride 2020 will take place entirely online. It includes a day co-organized with the office European Parliament in Greece, titled LGBTQI+ Rights: Aspirations and Challenges in EU and Greece, and an artistic program.

The entire program can be found at www.athenspride.eu.

This year we may not be uniting our voices in the street, but the stories you contributed are the voices that formed our central message. These stories reflect the reality LGBTQI+ people experience in Greece today. Some of these stories made us cry, frightened us, hurt us, and took us into the streets. But mostly these are stories that gave us the strength to say ENOUGH.

Enough of school bullying. Enough killings, discrimination, and isolation. Enough police violence. Enough abuse and violence in the family, the workplace and in the social environment. Enough of constantly feeling fear and insecurity.

In every corner of Greece, we LGBTQI+ people declare ENOUGH, and claim visibility, equality, and respect.
